The renovation of the existing shell within an archaeological protection zone in the Old Town of Rethymnon. The design focuses on respecting the historic character and scale of the environment, while preserving the identity of the building. At the same time, modern residential and hospitality requirements are incorporated, with emphasis on functionality and comfort. The central axis of the concept was the balanced coexistence of old and new, through a distinctive dialogue of memory, light and a contemporary architectural approach.
Architectural & decorative details
The architectural composition was based on the preservation and promotion of the original characteristics of the shell, such as the exposed wooden beams, the existing openings and the original spatial proportions. Materiality is organized around natural and timeless materials - wood, stone and smooth painted surfaces in neutral, earthy tones - reinforcing a sense of calm and continuity. Contemporary building elements (fixed furniture, kitchens, storage units and light fixtures) were designed with clean geometries and simple vocabulary to blend harmoniously into the historic context. Particular emphasis was placed on textures and lighting: natural fabrics, surfaces with obvious materiality and warm, mainly indirect lighting, which highlights the architectural elements and creates conditions of intimacy. The outdoor spaces are treated as an extension of the interior, reinforcing the relationship between the house and the urban fabric of the Old Town.
